We were created to be in relationship with God. He did not need to create us, but He chose to make us objects of His infinite love.  

The problem is that we have all rebelled against God. Rom. 6:23 says "the wages of sin is death." Because we have all sinned, each and every one of us owes God death (eternal separation from God in hell). Furthermore, heaven is a perfect place and it requires perfection to enter. This is why the only way we can enter heaven is to receive the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ which comes through faith. Christ died on the cross as our Substitute and shed His blood as the full payment for our sins. He was then buried and rose from the grave three days later (1 Cor. 15:3-4). The moment we trust in Him alone as our Savior, we are declared righteous by God, possessing the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
