Postal Service feared Trump’s rhetoric could cost it billions in Amazon business, documents reveal

The president’s repeated demands that the U.S. Postal Service raise the rates it charges Amazon sent the leaders of the country’s mail system scrambling earlier this year, fearful that a substantial price increase could end up costing its already beleaguered budget $1.3 billion in profits, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post. The USPS memo, unreleased until this week, reflects the political bind facing the agency this spring as it sought to balance President Trump’s political broadsides with its own urgent need to shore up its balance sheet.

Postmaster general announces he is 'suspending' policies that were blamed for causing mail delays ahead of election

Amid intense scrutiny, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said that he is expanding a task force on election mail and he expects the Postal Service to deliver "election mail on time and within our well-established service standards."
He said retail hours would not be changed, neither mail-sorting machines nor blue mailboxes would be removed, no mail-processing facilities would be closed, and that overtime would be available as needed.

BREAKING NEWS

The postmaster general said post office cuts would be suspended until after the election following criticism that they could derail mail-in voting.

Tuesday, August 18, 2020 2:11 PM EST
Louis DeJoy, the postmaster general, vowed that retail hours would not change, that no mail processing facilities would be closed and that overtime would continue to be approved.
His announcement came days before he was set to testify before Congress, after lawmakers in both parties and voter rights advocates charged that the policy changes were jeopardizing not only voters’ ability to cast their ballots safely in the general election, but the delivery of important medicines, paychecks and documents.

The stupid fucking asshole Trump is trying to steal the election but the only thing he's accomplishing is making everyone hate him.

BREAKING NEWS

The Postal Service warned it may not meet some states’ mail-in ballot deadlines, as President Trump resists new funding and criticizes mail voting.

Friday, August 14, 2020 4:08 PM EST
Many states have long allowed voters to request a mail ballot close to the election — only one, Rhode Island, meets the standard now being suggested by the Postal Service — but the Postal Service suggested that the large volume of voting by mail at a time of widespread delivery delays meant that states would be better off building more time into their systems.

About 1,500 Americans dropped dead yesterday because of the coronavirus thing. They probably didn't wear a mask when they should have done that. In other news, Fucktard Trump continues to be a stupid fucking asshole. The idiot is going out of his way to make everyone hate him.

The Washington Post

The United States recorded the most covid-19 deaths in a single day since mid-May on Wednesday: nearly 1,500 fatalities.

The toll escalated as a new study found that New York City’s death rate in the first two months of its outbreak rivaled that of the infamous 1918 flu pandemic. “For anyone who doesn’t understand the magnitude of what we’re living through, this pandemic is comparable in its effect on mortality to what everyone agrees is the previous worst pandemic,” said Jeremy S. Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston who led the research team.

In extraordinary comments to Fox News, President Trump said he is trying to prevent the U.S. Postal Service from delivering millions of mail-in ballots to voters by holding up $25 billion in emergency funding for the agency. “They need that money in order to make the post office work, so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump said.

The cash-strapped mail service is already experiencing days-long delays after Trump’s new postmaster general implemented new policies including a ban on overtime pay. Congressional Democrats have insisted on emergency funding for the agency in their negotiations over a new stimulus bill, which collapsed Thursday as the Senate adjourned for the next three and a half weeks. Many health experts say mail-in voting is the safest way for people to vote in November, but Trump has baselessly attacked efforts to expand it as a plot to steal the election. The president’s likely opponent, Joe Biden, called Trump’s latest comments “an assault on our democracy and economy by a desperate man.”

The Supreme Court ruled on pandemic-related voter relief for the first time Thursday, denying a GOP request that would have required a witness to be present when Rhode Island voters cast absentee ballots.

About 960,000 workers filed for unemployment insurance last week — the first time new claims dropped below 1 million since the outbreak intensified in March.

Hollywood is getting back to work after a five-month hiatus, but its fictional worlds will likely be transformed and restricted by the pandemic. “Crowd scenes are a no-go," our business desk wrote. “Real-world locations will be limited. On-screen romance will be less common, sometimes restricted to actors who have off-screen relationships.”

You want to buy this book even if you don't live in Idiot America.

This morning the Post Office delivered an excellent book about Fucktard Trump. I started reading it and already I know I'm going to finish the whole thing.

A quote from the book:

Today, Donald is much as he was at three years old: incapable of growing, learning, or evolving, unable to regulate his emotions, moderate his responses, or take in and synthesize information.

Bookstore shelves are overladen with anti-Trump books. Do we need another and what can one more book add that we don’t know already? The answer to the first question is a resounding “yes” with the book being reviewed being an example. The answer to the second is that none of the books — until this one — provides an inside vantage point that only a family member can supply. It is fair to question the author’s motives. She states “Donald, following the lead of my grandfather and with the complicity, silence, and inaction of his siblings, destroyed my father. I can’t let him destroy my country.”

In some respects, the book relieves the president of responsibility for his behavior. The president’s personality and behavior were largely due to Trump’s father. Donald Trump is an exemplar of the saying “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree.” The father, Fred Trump, was a sociopathic, cruel, bullying, serial liar, and the author shows in chilling detail how the more malleable Donald Trump followed the pattern set by his father.

However, Trump also is proof that personality and behavior are not wholly a matter of mimicry. The president is his father’s second son, and the first son, Fred Trump, Jr., rejected his father’s style of doing business after a short stint of working for him, and he became an airline pilot until his alcoholism forced him from that career. The author of this book shows how the current president voluntarily followed the example set by his father. He was an eager and capable student.

The mental health profession has adopted a principle that has become known as the Goldwater Rule. This rule prohibits a mental health professional making a diagnosis from a distance, one based solely on media reports and without the practitioner interviewing and testing the subject. Has the author here violated the Goldwater Rule? No. She bases her diagnoses on direct, personal observations. She is in a unique position to make a valid, qualified assessment because she is a clinical psychologist armed with a PhD.

She has many chilling incidents to share. The future president paying someone to take a college entrance exam for him is only the beginning of a life based on deceit. The author deftly crafts a compelling narrative rather than provide us with a disjointed litany of bad acts. The latter quickly would have become boring. However, this book grabs the reader from the very beginning, and compels attention until the short book is completed. The author also spices the book with her sly sense of humor.

This book is very highly recommended, especially for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the forces driving the current president. It is unfortunate that those who most need to read this book won’t, or if they do read the book, then it will be dismissed as self-serving drivel from a “libtard”. They do so at their own peril. The president’s mockery of his father and role model succumbing to Alzheimer’s should be a lesson for us all.

On November 3, 2020, Americans will decide who will be president for 4 more years. The choice is their favorite moron, Trump or Biden.

"Trump says he will block coronavirus aid for U.S. Postal Service if it doesn’t hike prices immediately. The president said the postal agency should quadruple its package delivery prices and said he will stop congressionally approved funding."

This is a problem. Trump is going out of his way to advertise his extreme stupidity. He doesn't understand how the world works. If you're selling something, for example delivering stuff, and you charge too much for it, you're not going to get any business. For example, Amazon could have UPS or FedEx deliver stuff if the Post Office charges too much. Any retarded child could figure that out. But Trump is too fucking dense to understand.

Biden is senile and he's a moron but he is not totally insane and extremely stupid like Trump.

I hope Biden wins.

President Fucktard Trump is a stupid fucking asshole.

What I wrote about Trump at the Washington Post:

"Higher prices also could impact Amazon, which acts as both retailer and shipper, by forcing it pass off higher costs on its customers to compete."

In other words I will have to pay more money when I buy stuff, and Trump thinks that's a good thing. Therefore I should vote for him. Is Trump a moron or what?

Trump says he will block coronavirus aid for U.S. Postal Service if it doesn’t hike prices immediatelyThe president said the postal agency should quadruple its package delivery prices and said he will stop congressionally approved funding.

By Lisa Rein and Jacob Bogage

President Trump on Friday said he would not be approving an emergency loan for the U.S. Postal Service if it did not immediately raise its prices for package delivery, confirming a recent Washington Post article that said he planned to exert more control over the agency.

“The Post Office is a joke," Trump told reporters. "The Post Office should raise the price [of package delivery] four times.”

Trump recently signed a law that allowed the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service to borrow $10 billion from the Treasury Department. The Post has reported that the White House wants to force changes at USPS as part of the terms of the loan. Trump confirmed on Friday that one of those new conditions is a requirement that the Postal Service raise prices.

“If they don’t raise the price, I’m not signing anything.”

He said that he won’t allow Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to approve the loan if prices aren’t raised.

Trump has railed for years against what he seems as mismanagement at the Postal Service, which has been battered by a decline in first-class mail in the Internet age – but which has found profitability with package delivery. The agency’s revenues have plunged about 30 percent during the pandemic, though, as business mail has declined.

Trump and his allies have frequently claimed that higher package rates on Internet shipping companies — Amazon, in particular — could ease the Postal Service’s financial troubles. But higher package rates could hurt the agency by artificially raising its prices above those of United Parcel Service and FedEx, analysts say. Higher prices also could impact Amazon, which acts as both retailer and shipper, by forcing it pass off higher costs on its customers to compete.

The Postal Service repeatedly has defended its arrangement with the e-commerce giant, saying it gets fair rates for the services it provides in a highly competitive environment.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Bad news

Today is January 30, 2019. A bit cold today in northwestern Illinois, -24 degrees (-31 Celsius).

The post office delivers my Wall Street Journal but not today because of the extreme cold.

“Neither Snow Nor Rain ..." Is Not Really the USPS Motto (or Policy)

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” If this motto summons up visions of brave postal workers trudging through inclement weather conditions, you’re not alone—for over a century, it’s been synonymous with the tireless work the postal service does to make sure you get your junk mail, magazines, and birthday cards on time. But if you think it’s the official creed of the United States Postal Service, think again—it was actually written about another set of postal workers from around 500 BCE.

In fact, the USPS doesn’t have an official motto [PDF]. And given that the postal service regularly cancels mail delivery due to weather, the misunderstanding about its motto regularly leads to even more frustration from mail-less customers.

Blame a building for the confusion. In 1912, a building then called the General Post Office Building (since renamed the James A. Farley Post Office Building) was constructed in what would later become ZIP code 10001. Smack in the center of Manhattan, the grand building was built right across from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. It had prime real estate and a profile to match—white columns, a grandiose reception hall, and even a dry moat around it to light up its gigantic basement.

It also had an architect with a taste for classical flair. William Mitchell Kendall designed other column-studded sites like theManhattan Municipal Building and the Arlington Memorial Bridge. Kendall, whose dad was a classics scholar, also loved the words of the ancients as much as their columns. So when he designed the post office, he decided to inscribe it with a phrase by Herodotus, the Greek scholar sometimes known as the father of history.

Kendall modified a translation of Herodotus’s work by George Herbert Palmer, a professor at Harvard and a preeminent classicist, for the building. The line was written by Herodotus in paragraph 98, book eight of his book The Persian Wars, which recounts the history of a war that took place between the Greeks and the Persian Empire from 499 to 479 BCE (the exact time period of the war is disputed).

Herodotus was impressed by the efficient, relay-like postal system employed by the Persians, which he compared to the Greek torch race. “There is nothing in the world which travels faster than the Persian couriers,” he wrote admiringly. The postal system may have been impressive, but it ultimately didn’t help Persia—after decades of conflicts, they lost the wars.

The Persians may not have won in Greece, but the Persian couriers who inspired the inscription must have been on to something—to this day, the USPS relies on a relay-like system to both get mail across the country and help postal carriers on their daily rounds. They may not operate in all weather conditions, but today’s USPS still manages to deliver hundreds of billions of pieces of mail each year. Not bad for an organization with no official motto.
