Is there any way to convince a creationist of evolution and the age of the earth?

"What about regular young earth creationists, what would convince them?"

The typical creationist is an uneducated moron who either never graduated from high school, or somehow got thru it without learning anything about science. We are talking about some real burning stupid.

The rare exceptions have something virtually all Christians don't have. They have just a little bit of curiosity. They get interested in something and then they research it. If they do this for evolution, if they find out how evolution works and if they find out there's more evidence for it then they imagined possible, then they are on their way to growing up and facing facts.

You can't help these people. They have to figure things out on their own and they have to want to do this.

Ameteurgeek wrote "Also an 'ex-YEC' I'm now atheist. I simply went looking for the answers myself."

He is exactly what I was writing about. He "went looking for the answers". Nobody helped him. That's the only way it works. A creationist has to want to do some research and then actually do it.

Then we have Steve who wrote "Creation is the only logical answer that fits the available evidence."

That's the burning stupid that can't be fixed. Steve believes in magic and Steve will always believe in magic because Steve is an uneducated moron.

Did your religious indoctrination include the importance of having faith? Do you now realize faith is not a virtue?

The nuns repeatedly told us "You must have faith" as if believing in nonsense that has zero evidence is a good idea. Fortunately I now realize faith is a mental illness. Did you have a similar experience?

"FAITH. No one word personifies the absolute worst and most wicked properties of religion better than that. Faith is mind-rot. It’s the poison that destroys critical thinking, undermines evidence, and leads people into lives dedicated to absurdity. It’s a parasite regarded as a virtue."
-- PZ Myers

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason."
-- Benjamin Franklin

“Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is the belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.”
― Richard Dawkins
Update 1: Arachnophobia, scientific facts have strong evidence so faith is not necessary. You didn't know that?
Update 2: Shick, I'm sorry I made you cry, but the question was for rational adults.
Update 3: Olga wrote "So, what is the problem?" Please read the 3 quotes I provided to help you understand why faith is a mental illness.
Update 4: antonius, you wrote a brilliant well-written answer.
Update 5: Todd Blone, your quote is from Frank Herbert's science fiction Dune universe.

I think that if one believes so deeply and really thinks they know there is a god, then they ought to be able to provide at least a little evidence of that god's existence. So Shick if you believe so much in that god thingie why don't you have evidence of it's existence? After all, you seem to wish to promote your god as most believers do, then just put the evidence on the table and we will just shut up.
It's your god you are always protecting, so you should just show the evidence. Well I know that you do not have any evidence of your god and you believe in it because you have been trained to believe. Your so-called word of that god called the bible is just a book of dogma designed to keep you fooled, as it offers nothing in the way of any evidence.

Stupid question: "Atheist, do you ever think that you may be wrong?"

"Atheist, do you ever think that you may be wrong?"

I might be wrong about a stock market investment.

However I'm 100% certain the Earth is not flat, the Earth orbits the Sun, the Easter Bunny is not real, and magic god fairies are not real. I'm also 100% certain every religion ever invented, especially the Christian Death Cult, is ridiculous bullsh!t.

God equals magic. Magic is not real. Any child could figure that out. It's called reality.

And anyone who says they might be wrong about magical beings not existing, they are not atheists. These people are called "Idiots".

One more thing: There is this concept called "evidence". Christians don't know what evidence is. They prefer faith which is the process of believing anything that makes them feel good no matter how ridiculous and idiotic and childish the fantasy is. Faith is a mental illness and it's usually incurable.

Tammy wrote "I may be wrong about gods."

Do some people say they might be wrong about Easter Bunnies? Of course not. Apparently Tammy thinks supernatural magicians are more likely than magical rabbits. Tammy is not an atheist. Tammy is an idiot.

All religious people are fucking idiots.

"Christians: do you actually realise you drive non believers further away?"

Everything about religion drives people away because every religious fantasy is ridiculous. The only people attracted to this nonsense are not too bright which is why the religious population becomes dumber every year.

Can you imagine an intelligent young person who loves science joining some goofy religion? It's virtually impossible in the 21st century.

This is why all religions will eventually go extinct: "Those who seek God will find Him."

Imagine being insane enough to believe looking for a magic fairy will mean finding a magic fairy? Religion is for one kind of person only: the mentally ill.

A fucking idiot invoked dead 20th century dictators to justify his magic god fairy fantasy.

Besides those insane and very dead 20th century dictators we have countless atheist suicide bombers here in the 21st century.

Oh wait, there are exactly zero atheist suicide bombers because atheists don't believe in a magical heaven.

I know a lot of atheists but for some strange reason not one of them is an insane and very dead 20th century dictator. Instead they are fathers or mothers in very nice families. Isn't that interesting?

And then of course there are American prisons. In a nation of 15% atheists the percentage of atheists in prisons is virtually zero.

And then there is Sweden which has virtually 100% atheists and it's a very successful and very peaceful (crime is rare) country.

Interesting fact: Religion makes people evil.

Another interesting fact: Religious violence and religious wars are out of control and it's getting worse.

"Anarchist groups in the 19th century"

THE 19TH CENTURY. Hey guess what? This is the 21st century. Can you say "21st century"? Why don't you practice saying that to help you understand.

By the way I never met a 19th century anarchist. Have you?

ONE MORE THING: Do you have any evidence for your cowardly ridiculous childish magical-god-fairy fantasy or do you believe this magical nonsense only because it makes you feel good and/or you were brainwashed to believe in a magical being?

This is not the Dark Ages. We normal people live here in the 21st century. We know things these days, for example we know magic and magical fairies are not real.

Also, if every atheist in the world (there's at least one Billion of us and our numbers are growing rapidly) was an axe murderer, that would not be evidence for your magical being who hides somewhere in the universe.

I suggest: Grow up, educate yourself, and face facts. Reality is what it is. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and a magical god being is not reality. And stop wasting your time making up excuses to live in the Dark Ages.

I answered a question.

Jimmy C, you wrote totally great story.

I had a sort of similar experience with a huge gorilla at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo (which by the way is completely free). Thick glass separated me from the gorilla who was sitting on a stool not more than one foot from me. The gorilla waited until I looked at my friends to talk to them. Then he got up and threw his entire weight right at me just as I was about to look at him again. In the one second I had to think I completely forgot about the thick glass and jumped back in horror.

Like you I could not hear this creature laughing but most certainly it was laughing because the practical joke he played on me required intelligence and planning and his execution of the joke was perfect. I shook my finger at the bad gorilla which made him laugh some more.

We share an ancestor with these incredible apes and also we are apes.

The religious implications: Christianity is total nonsense.

I was by the way already an atheist thanks to a girl friend who asked me "Why do you go to church?" The question shocked me and I couldn't answer it. Not much later I threw the ridiculous god fairy fantasy out the window.

What do you think of the concept 'Survival of the fittest'?

"What do you think of the concept 'Survival of the fittest'?"

The cheetah has evolved to run fast to catch prey. The prey have evolved to run fast to avoid becoming a cheetah's lunch. It's an evolutionary arms race. The fittest survive. Their genes are passed on to the next generation.

Another example: The gradual increase in the brain size of human ancestors made it possible for them to survive in their hostile environment.

Another example: The evolution of shells on turtles allowed them to survive attacks in the sea from above or below.

"How does evolution prove there is No God?"

"How does evolution prove there is No God?"

Evolution, which is a basic fact of science, completely destroys the most important hiding place for the god of the gaps. Evolution makes a god's magic wand unnecessary to explain the development of new species. A magical being (aka a god) with nothing to do is a magical being who doesn't exist.

Of course a superstitious person who was desperate to have a reason to believe in a magical being could always invoke its magical powers for some unsolved scientific problem, like for example how did the first simple living cells get a foothold on Earth almost four Billion years ago. But what's the point of hiding its magic wand there when eventually it's going to have to find some other hiding place.

Also, if a god fairy is not necessary to explain something as complex as the development of new species, it's ridiculous to pretend it might be necessary to explain something else.

The choice is reality (science) or fantasy (a god fairy's magical powers). Most educated people, especially the world's best scientists, have chosen reality.

Is the Christian fundamentalist demonization of science borne of ignorance or ingratitude?

You totally understand the many things wrong with Christians.

"Do they realise that science has improved their lives in every conceivable way and yet still choose to spit on it anyway while benefiting from the fruits of the scientist's labour or are they just purely ignorant of everything that science has done for them?"

Christians don't realize anything. They have been trained since age two to not think. And of course they know nothing about science. They have been trained to hate and fear science. They think trying to understand science or studying science is a one-way ticket to their ridiculous magical hell fantasy.

"To attack evolution is to attack all science. To suggest otherwise and portray evolution as a pseudo-science is being dishonest, and knowingly so too."

Evolution is the most important fact of science because it's about all life including the human ape species. And this is why Christians fear evolution. Evolution destroys their religion and they know it. To solve this problem Christians either deny the whole thing (even though the evidence is beyond overwhelming and growing every day), or even worse they invoke their Magic Jeebus Man to invent or guide or use evolution which is a ridiculous pollution of science.

The only possible solution is the complete eradication of the moronic Christian Death Cult. To achieve this goal is to make competent science education, especially evolutionary biology, mandatory for all American students starting at age six, including students at religious schools where they must be forced to hire atheist (aka competent) science teachers. As students become scientifically literate they will on their own be able to throw out the death cult they are being brainwashed to believe by their idiot parents.

Creationists are fucking idiots.

"What proof would prove to Creationists that evolution is true?" -- A question I answered at Yahoo.

Expect for one very rare exception, I have never met a creationist who was willing to make an honest effort to understand any scientific evidence for evolution. They just automatically reject all evidence for evolution without ever making any effort to understand it.

Creationists are unable to understand science and they have no interest in understanding science. For them everything is magic so why bother knowing anything about 21st century science.

I could say a few more things about the breathtaking stupidity and insanity of Christian scum but then some crybaby would get my answer deleted.

Just one more thing: Try to imagine being as brain-dead retarded as Gregory.

Another one more thing: I recently watched an On Demand HBO documentary called Questioning Darwin. They showed the Bible thumpers explaining why evolutionary biology makes them cry. They all had one thing in common: They had the most stupid looking faces I ever saw in my life.
