Several years ago at another website I was having a conversation with a creationist about one of the strongest evidences for evolution, ERVs in the exact same location in the DNA of human apes and chimpanzee apes.
After I explained this evidence he invoked the Christian Creationist Discovery Institute (aka Crackpot Central). He said according to the crackpots (he used a different word) those ERVs were still functional therefore the evidence is wrong. I explained it's doesn't matter if those ERVs are functional or not, what matters is they are in the exact same location in both people and chimps. The only possible explanation is those ERVs were inherited from a common ancient ape ancestor.
Then he surprised me. He said this was a problem for creationism and he asked me to recommend a book about evolution. I recommended Why Evolution Is True by Jerry Coyne. He said he would buy and read the book but he wasn't going to throw out the magic god fairy.
I said fine with me and I congratulated him for having a brain and using it. I never communicated with him again but I'm betting by now he has thrown out the fairy.
For more information about ERVs I recommend http://darwinkilledgod.blogspot.com/2017/10/two-quotes-from-why-evolution-is-true.html
"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
