I recently discovered an excellent place to play chess on the internet and it's free. It's called chess.com. I like it because they keep a record of games played, making it easy to go back later and figure out how I lost, or if I win I can play over the game to admire how brilliant I was.
The new World Chess Champion is from India. Way to go India. You can read about it and analyze the games at Viswanathan Anand wins 2012 World Chess Championship and at Viswanathan Anand retains World Chess Championship after Rapid win against Gelfand.
There is a science blog that sometimes has posts about chess. Most recently it has this post: Anand Wins!
If you don't play chess there's something wrong with you. Chess is the best possible way to waste time. On the internet there are thousands of opponents throughout the world who are ready to play chess with you 24 hours a day. If you're a beginner there are plenty of other beginners at chess.com. If you're a strong player there are many opponents at chess.com who are as good as or better than you are. You can choose to play rated games so from your rating you can see your progress.
The best way to become a strong player? Study the endgame. I recommend Capablanca's Best Chess Endings by Irving Chernev. Knowing the endgame well can improve the rest of your chess game because it helps you understand what are the best moves to get an advantage in the endgame.
