"Why do people believe in God?"
A list of reasons:
They're gullible.
They like to believe stuff that makes them feel good.
They were brainwashed.
They know nothing about science so they say god-did-it.
Mostly it's a stupidity problem. Extreme stupidity.

"How do you make sense of the world when there is no god, there's no objective meaning, morality doesn't exist and life is so mundane?"
Life is what people make it. A magic god fairy is not required.
The morality thing: Anyone with a brain can figure out it's in everyone's best interest to be civilized. The Magic Man is not required.
There is no magic in the universe therefore a magic god fairy is impossible. This is a basic fact of reality.
