At https://lichess.org/ (totally free, no ads, best chess website in the universe) there are now more than 13,400 people playing chess at the same time.
When I want to play a game I never have to wait more than 5 seconds to be matched with an opponent with almost the same rating. My most recent opponent lives in Kenya, Africa.
After a game I use their free computer analysis to find out what I did wrong and what I should have done. The world would be a much better place if everyone played chess. We are all friends no matter what country we live in.
"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne

From my living room in Florida I just played chess with somebody in Africa. The 21st century is a wonderful place.
