When one dies, they either go to Paradise/Abraham's bosom or Hades/Tartarus (Lk 16:22-23: 23:43; 2Pet 2:4). It is a waiting place for the Day of Judgment when the final decision is made by God to send one to heaven or hell. As souls are always conscious, they are conscious during this time. It appears that the places also serve as a pre-DOJ reward or punishment. Hell is a place of outer darkness where one can’t speak because of their gnashing of teeth associate with their agony in a lake of fire (Mt 8:12; Rev 21:8) whereas in contrast, Hades is bad, but not as bad.
