Biologist Ken Miller has done more than anyone to prevent Christian assholes from dumbing down the teaching of evolution. There is one problem. Ken Miller pretends or really is a Catholic, aka idiot.

The first, he says, is an observed fact, and the development of weapons such as horns, canine teeth, spurs, etc., is a result of natural selection acting through such combats.
The second is an inference from observed facts and "an inference supported by singularly little evidence." The first he still holds as strongly as Darwin himself. The latter he at first accepted; but he soon came to doubt the possibility of such an explanation, at first from considering the fact that in butterflies sexual differences are as strongly marked as in birds, and it was to him impossible to accept female choice in their case. As the whole question of color came to be better understood he saw equally valid reasons for the total rejection of the theory even as to birds and mammals.
The presence of arctic plants in the southern hemisphere and on isolated mountain tops within the tropics developed the third difference of standpoint between these brethren in an identical field. Darwin accounted for the phenomena by a cooling of the tropical lowlands of the whole earth during the glacial period to such an extent as to allow large numbers of north temperate and arctic plants to spread across the continents to the southern hemispheres, and as the cold passed away to ascend to the summits of isolated tropical mountains. Dr. Wallace says of this view: "The difficulties in the way of Darwin's view are twofold. First, that of lowering temperature of inter-tropical lowlands to the required extent would inevitably have destroyed much of the overwhelming luxuriances and variety of plant, insect and bird life that characterize those regions. This has so impressed myself. Bates and others familiar with the tropics as to render the idea wholly inconceivable; and the only reason why Darwin did not feel this appears to be that he really knew nothing personally of the tropics beyond a few days at Bahia and Rio. and could have had no conception of its wonderfully rich and highly specialized fauna and flora. In the second place. even if a sufficient lowering of temperature had occurred during the ice age. it would not account for the facts, which involve, as Sir Joseph Hooker remarks, a continuous current of vegetation from north to south, going much further back than the glacial period, because it has led to the transmission not of existing species only but of distinct representative species, and even distinct genera, showing that the process must have been going on long before the cold period. The reason why Darwin was unaffected by these various difficulties may perhaps be found in the circumstance that he had held his views for so many years almost unchallenged."

I therefore accepted pangenesis at first. because I have always felt it a relief (as did Darwin) to have some hypothesis, however provisional and improbable. that would serve to explain the facts; and I told him that 'I shall never be able to give it up till a better one supplies its place.' I never imagined that it could be directly disproved, but Mr. F. Galton's experiments of transfusing a large quantity of the blood of rabbits into other individuals of quite different breeds. and afterwards finding that the progeny was not in the slightest degree altered, did seem to me to be very nearly a disproof, although Darwin did not accept it as such. But when at a much later period. Dr. Weismann showed that there is actually no valid evidence for the transmission of such characters. and when he further set forth a mass of evidence in support of his theory of the continuity of the germ-plasm, the 'better theory' was found. and I finally gave as pangenesis was untenable."

Embryology makes the Magic Jeebus Man cry.

What could be more interesting than the four billion years history of life on this planet? A nice thing about evolution is it will always have research opportunities. We already have a strong knowledge about how evolution works and the evidence for it grows everyday. This scientific progress will last forever. It's very interesting how biologists can make predictions about what must be found if evolution is true. So far evolution has passed every test.

My mother was born and raised on a South Dakota farm. In the 1920's when she was girl she was occasionally required to kill a chicken for dinner. She would carry an axe, chase and capture a chicken, then cut off its head. Not many little girls get to do that today.
By the way my father was raised on a Minnesota farm, a not very successful farm and they were very poor. When my father was a little boy in the 1920's his job was to go fishing at a lake on their property so the family could eat dinner.
These days this the best way for a farmer to kill a chicken:

This clause was originally only for the federal government but another amendment which came later made it apply for all governments and government schools.
Our founding fathers in 1789 did not want America to become a theocracy. If they were politicians today they would never get elected in our Bible Belt because Christian assholes want to throw out our Bill of Rights so they can stick their Magic Man anywhere they want, including praying to Jeebus in our public schools and forcing biology teachers to give their moronic magical creationism fantasy equal time with evolution. On October 30, 2001, the ACLU of Alabama, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Southern Poverty Law Center were among groups which filed suit in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama, asking that the monument be removed because it "sends a message to all who enter the State Judicial Building that the government encourages and endorses the practice of religion in general and Judeo-Christianity in particular."
The trial, titled Glassroth v. Moore, began on October 15, 2002. Evidence for the plaintiffs included testimony that lawyers of different religious beliefs had changed their work practices, including routinely avoiding visiting the court building to avoid passing by the monument, and testimony that the monument created a religious atmosphere, with many people using the area for prayer.
Moore argued that he would not remove the monument, as doing so would violate his oath of office:
On this note, Moore said that the Ten Commandments are the "moral foundation" of U.S. law, stating that in order to restore this foundation, "we must first recognize the source from which all morality springs...[by] recogniz[ing] the sovereignty of God." He added that the addition of the monument to the state judiciary building marked "the beginning of the restoration of the moral foundation of law to our people" and "a return to the knowledge of God in our land."[9]
Additionally, Moore acknowledged an explicit religious intent in placing the monument, agreeing that the monument "reflects the sovereignty of God over the affairs of men" and "acknowledge[s] God’s overruling power over the affairs of men."[11] However, in Moore's view this did not violate the doctrine of separation of church and state; as the presiding judge later summarized it, Moore argued that "the Judeo-Christian God reigned over both the church and the state in this country, and that both owed allegiance to that God", although they must keep their affairs separate.[9]
Judgment and appeal[edit]
On November 18, 2002, federal U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson issued his ruling declaring that the monument violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and was thus unconstitutional:
Judge Thompson's decision mandated that Moore remove the monument from the state judicial building by January 3, 2003, but stayed this order on December 23, 2002, after Moore appealed the decision to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. This appeal was argued on June 4, 2003, before a three-judge panel in Atlanta, Georgia. On July 1, 2003, the panel issued a ruling upholding the lower court's decision, agreeing that "the monument fails two of Lemon's three prongs. It violates the Establishment Clause." Additionally, the court noted that different religious traditions assign different wordings of the Ten Commandments, meaning that "choosing which version of the Ten Commandments to display can have religious endorsement implications."[11]
In response to the appeals court's decision, Judge Thompson lifted his earlier stay on August 5, 2003, requiring Moore to have the monument removed from public areas of the state judicial building by August 20.[12]
Protests and monument removal[edit]
On August 14, Moore announced his intention to disobey Judge Thompson's order to have the monument removed. Two days later, large rallies in support of Moore and the Ten Commandments monument began forming in front of the judicial building, featuring speakers such as Alan Keyes, the Reverend Jerry Falwell, and Moore himself. The crowd peaked at an estimated count of 4,000 that day,[13] and anywhere from several hundred to over a thousand protesters remained through the end of August.
The time limit for removal expired on August 20, with the monument still in place in the building's rotunda. As specified in Judge Thompson's order, the state of Alabama faced fines of $5,000 a day until the monument was removed. In response, the eight other members of the Alabama Supreme Court intervened on August 21, unanimously overruled Moore, and ordered the removal of the monument.[14]
Moore said that Thompson, "fearing that I would not obey his order, decided to threaten other state officials and force them to remove the monument if I did not do so. A threat of heavy fines was his way of coercing obedience to that order," an action that Moore sees as a violation of the Eleventh Amendment to the United States Constitution.[4]
On August 27, the monument was moved to a non-public side room in the judicial building.[15] The monument was not immediately removed from the building for several reasons—pending legal hearings, the monument's weight, worries that the monument could break through the floor if it was taken outside intact, and a desire to avoid confrontation with protesters massed outside the structure. The monument was not actually removed from the state judicial building until July 19, 2004.[16]
Removal from office[edit]
On August 22, 2003, two days after the deadline for the Ten Commandments monument's removal had passed, the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission (JIC) filed a complaint with the Alabama Court of the Judiciary (COJ), a panel of judges, lawyers and others appointed variously by judges, legal leaders, the governor and the lieutenant governor. The complaint effectively suspended Moore from the Chief Justice position pending a hearing by the COJ.[17]
The COJ ethics hearing was held on November 12, 2003. Moore repeated his earlier sentiment that "to acknowledge God cannot be a violation of the Canons of Ethics. Without God there can be no ethics." He also acknowledged that he would repeat his defiance of the court order if given another opportunity to do so, and that if he returned to office, "I certainly wouldn't leave [the monument] in a closet, shrouded from the public." In closing arguments, the Assistant Attorney General said Moore's defiance, left unchecked, "undercuts the entire workings of the judicial system.... What message does that send to the public, to other litigants? The message it sends is: If you don't like a court order, you don't have to follow it."[18] Moore had previously stated his belief that the order was unlawful, and that compliance with such an order was not an enforceable mandate.
The next day, the COJ issued a unanimous opinion ruling that "Chief Justice Moore has violated the Alabama Canons of Judicial Ethics as alleged by the JIC in its complaint." The COJ had several disciplinary options, including censure or suspension without pay, but because Moore's responses had indicated he would defy any similar court orders in the future, the COJ concluded that "under these circumstances, there is no penalty short of removal from office that would resolve this issue."[19] Moore was immediately removed from his post.
Moore appealed the COJ's ruling to the Supreme Court of Alabama on December 10, 2003. A special panel of retired judges and justices was randomly selected to hear the case. Moore argued that the COJ did not consider the underlying legality of the federal courts' order that the monument be removed from the courthouse. The Alabama Supreme Court rejected this argument, saying that the COJ did not have the authority to overrule the federal courts, only to determine whether Moore violated the Canons of Judicial Ethics. Therefore, the Court reasoned, it was enough to show that a procedurally-valid order was in place against Moore. Moore also argued that the COJ had imposed a religious test on him to hold his office, and that the COJ's actions had violated his own rights under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.[20]
The Supreme Court of Alabama rejected each of these arguments as well, and ruled on April 30, 2004 that the COJ had acted properly. The court also upheld the sanction of removal as appropriate.[20]

VATICAN CITY— Pope Francis criticized the Catholic Church’s record on child sex abuse and its history of protecting abuser priests, even as the Vatican faced scrutiny over its handling of a priest suspected of violating U.S. laws against child pornography.
In remarks to his advisory panel on child protection Thursday, the pope said the church woke up to “these crimes in a delayed manner.”
“Maybe the old practice of moving people around, of not facing the problem, put our consciousness asleep,” he added.
The pope did not address the case of an Italian priest whom the Vatican recalled after the U.S. State Department notified it on Aug. 21 about a “possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images.”
The Vatican’s statement last Friday announcing the recall didn’t name the priest, identifying him only as a Holy See diplomat accredited to Washington. But a person familiar with the situation said he is Msgr. Carlo Alberto Capella, a longtime diplomat.
An attempt to reach Msgr. Capella through the Vatican wasn’t successful.
The case has raised concerns among U.S. bishops that it could undermine a decade and a half of efforts to regain public trust on clerical sex abuse.
The Vatican statement said the priest was in Vatican City and under investigation by the Vatican prosecutor, who had “already commenced international collaboration to obtain elements relative to the case.”
According to a person familiar with the matter, Msgr. Capella has submitted to house arrest and has surrendered all his electronic devices to Vatican officials who will examine them for evidence.
Shortly after the Vatican announcement, the head of the U.S. Catholic hierarchy openly pressed the Vatican to handle the matter with transparency and rigor. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a statement Friday that Msgr. Capella’s recall and investigation were a “serious issue,” and urged the Holy See to be “forthcoming with more details.”
The cardinal cited the U.S. bishops’ procedures for dealing with sex abuse allegations—adopted in 2002 amid a nationwide scandal over clerical sex abuse of children—and said that, as in all such cases, an “immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation should begin in cooperation with law enforcement.”
The U.S. bishops’ leadership was frustrated by the Vatican’s failure to consult them before recalling Msgr. Capella, according to a person familiar with their thinking. Depending on the strength of evidence, the bishops might have supported waiving his diplomatic immunity, allowing him to be investigated and tried in the U.S., the person said.
The U.S. State Department did not provide the Vatican with any evidence against Msgr. Capella prior to his leaving the country, according to people familiar with the matter. A State Department official didn’t comment on the evidence question, but outlined procedures for charging diplomats and said the Vatican didn’t waive immunity.
The U.S. bishops hope the Vatican deals with the case more quickly and transparently than it did that of Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, Holy See envoy to the Dominican Republic, who was recalled in August 2013 following reports that he had sexually abused boys in the Caribbean country. After being defrocked, the former archbishop was still awaiting a criminal trial in the Vatican when he died of a heart attack in August 2015.
Pope Francis has spoken strongly against sex abuse by priests—likening the practice to a “black Mass”—but his pontificate has been marked by criticism, even from his own advisers, of the Vatican’s performance.
One of the two abuse survivors on the child protection commission, which Pope Francis established in 2014, was forced to take a leave of absence last year after criticizing the pope’s record on clerical sex abuse. The other survivor on the panel resigned in March, complaining that Vatican officials—though not the pope himself—were hindering the body’s work.
On Thursday, the pope told the commission that he regretted extending leniency to one Italian priest who was later convicted by a civil court. “That was the only time I did it, never again,” the pope said. “I learned my lesson.”
The highest Vatican official to be criminally charged with sex abuse is Australian Cardinal George Pell, Pope Francis ’ finance chief, who was charged in June on multiple counts by prosecutors in his native country. He has taken a leave of absence from the Vatican and returned to Australia to face the charges.
Msgr. Capella, a priest from the diocese of Milan, has been an official at the Holy See’s mission to the U.S. since last year. He earlier served in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State with special responsibility for dealings with Italy.
