"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne

Mali, Africa
Somebody wrote this comment at the Washington Post:
I know that many, ok I guess most, Americans do not follow news about Africa. I spent a vast majority of my adult working life in Africa, working for the USG. I love the continent, it's people and all the diverse cultures. I was last in Mali, for 6 months, in 2013. The insurgents were attacking all over, and Bamako was in a constant state of flux.
One of the highlights of my life, and my wife's as well, was when we attended the Music Festival in the Desert at Essakane in January, 2007. Followed by 2 days in Timbuktu. Impossible to describe to anyone who has never been to the real Africa.
I am afraid that you are right, and this story will be lost in all the noise of the virus, elections and other things. My heart goes out to the people of Africa. All they want is what the rest of us want. To be able to live without fear, take care of their families and work, and hope, for a better life for their children.
