Ralph Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis - Andrew Davis

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
♪ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (1910) BBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Andrew Davis Gloucester Cathedral, 2010

Gloucester Cathedral is a most wonderful building, and one which is perfect for the performance of music, whether it is the daily round of highly-professional cathedral choir choral evensongs (surely the finest free concert anywhere in this part of the United Kingdom) or the regular choral and orchestral concerts provided by talented local and national musicians, or during the world-famous Three Choirs Festival. And then there are especially memorable events such as the centenary performance of the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams recorded in a dark and empty Gloucester Cathedral in 2010 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis. This uniquely beautiful piece was composed in 1910 specifically for performance in the sublime acoustic of Gloucester Cathedral at the Three Choirs Festival of that year. This spellbinding performance is surely one of the finest on record.
