What I wrote at the New York Times about America's lunatics problem.

I'm old enough to remember when schools were safe. There was never any problems. Unfortunately these days the violence is out of control. Children only 6 years old have been killed by lunatics.

The 2nd Amendment is sacred. We can't throw it out. But maybe it would be OK to not let lunatics own weapons.

The House will pass significant gun control legislation soon, but as long as Republicans and Mitch McConnell are running it, it won't come up for a vote. And if it did pass both Houses of Congress, Trump would veto it. An overwhelming majority of Americans want significant gun control legislation It goes up after every tragedy, and then fades slightly. Universal background checks should be a no-brainer because approval usually polls 85 to 90%. Public Policy Polling did a poll last March that found that 87 percent of people supported universal background checks, including 89 percent of Democrats, 85 percent of Republicans and 85 percent of independents. Still, no vote on it in the Senate until Democrats take over the Senate and boot McConnell.
