Something from the New York Times. I don't understand it.

"Some Americans who didn’t need their stimulus payments donated their stimulus checks to those in greater need."

The government mailed me a check for $1,200.00. I didn't need it but of course I didn't give it to anyone. Why would anyone give their money away?
