"Why wouldn't God hide and make us think he doesn't or at least might not exist?"
Nobody has ever seen the god thing. It has provided zero evidence for its existence.
Another problem with the god fairy: It's a ridiculous childish fantasy. Also, the magic god fairy is impossible. There is no magic in the universe.
Also, we know things these days. The god of the gaps has run out of hiding places. A god fairy who never had anything to do is a fairy that doesn't exist.
Here in the 21st century there are still millions of people who suck up to this imaginary sky daddy. Why? I think it's a stupidity problem.
"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
