Why do some brainwashed Christians grow up and throw out the ridiculous cult while other brainwashed Christians stay brainwashed?

That's a damned good question, and I don't really know. I haven't found a theory that satisfactorily explains the majority of cases. Perhaps the reasons are too complex for that.
All I know is my own situation. I am the only person in a huge extended family to leave the religion I was brought up in. It wasn't my intention to ever leave. Like other Christians I always opined that I could never live without my God because he was my life and my all.
Then I actually studied the Bible for myself, without the hyper-legalist Church of Christ glasses forced upon me as a child. That was the key. If I had studied the Bible with the presuppositions I was taught, then I would have never discovered the truth which is the Bible was composed and written by men.
It wasn't because of education alone. Yes I am educated but my still-fudie father is even more educated and works as a science teacher, so that isn't the only reason.
Hell, I don't know why!

"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
