I asked this question and someone wrote an excellent answer.
"Why are some people able to throw out their religious brainwashing while other brainwashed people never learn how to grow up and face facts?"
Because some people have such low IQ's that they'll continue to believe anything throughout their life, just because they were told so, no matter how ridiculous it is. And for some, who eventually figure out the obvious, still take an embarrassingly long time to realize that fairytale magic snake oil crap is bullshit, sometimes well into the adult years.
It doesn't take many brain cells to realize such things as imaginary friends being just that, imaginary, and that putting your hands together and making a request won't magically grant you your wish from some fairy in the sky which is looking out for you. People should have grown out of that make-believe by 12, at the latest. At least if you care about reality.

"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
