"Just wondering how atheists cope with the meaninglessness and the futility of it all if life is, as they say, ultimately purposeless?"
This morning as the sun rose I saw the clouds turn bright red. The entire eastern sky was lit up. It was the most colorful sunrise I ever saw. Meanwhile, high in the sky, I saw the waning crescent moon, 30% full.
That beautiful moon will still be up there for a few more billion years but I was able to see it thousands of times.
Maybe life is meaningless but I'm not complaining. I was lucky to be born and even more lucky to still be alive all these years.
I thank goodness I will have no magical 2nd life. I prefer to live in the universe we have now instead of a universe with supernatural magic. I prefer reality because it's interesting and because it's real.
"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne

"The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference." -- Richard Dawkins
