Welcome to Offerspill Chess Club, Norway's largest chess club with Magnus Carlsen as founder and chairman!
What is Offerspill Chess Club?
Offerspill can be translated to “sacrificing play”. The club was created in June 2019 in the midst of a discussion within the Norwegian Chess Federation concerning a sponsor agreement with the Kindred Group. The agreement with a value of NOK 50 mill was turned down, mainly due to Kindred being a gambling company. Offerspill voiced strong support for the agreement that would have entailed a revolutionary development of chess in Norway. In the aftermath, Offerspill and Kindred proudly announced a collaboration in early 2020, where Kindred became Offerspill's main sponsor for a two year period, with an annual value of NOK 2 million for the club. As chess is not considered a sport (idrett) in Norway, chess does not receive any revenues from the Government, and young talents have few or no options to pursue a professional career. But, together with Kindred this is something Offerspill wants to change.
