Germany acknowledges genocide in Namibia during colonization, promises more than $1 billion in development projects as atonement

Tens of thousands of people from the Herero and Nama tribes were killed or driven into the Kalahari desert where they starved to death by German colonial forces between 1904 and 1908, when Germany controlled what is now Namibia but was known then as German South West Africa.
Namibian leaders have sought an apology for years but had hoped for direct reparations, which Germany refused on legal grounds. The promised development projects will be carried out over the next 30 years.
