What I wrote:
"How is being brought up in a religion, going to church all week, and reading the bible everyday NOT brainwashing?"
Of course it's brainwashing. It's also child abuse.
The indoctrination starts at a very young age because the child abusers know if they wait too long their victims will be old enough to think for themselves.
Without this disgusting child abuse, every moronic religious cult would go extinct in less than a century.

What someone else wrote:
Because kids go to schools everyday and read from science textbooks. Is that brainwashing?
The difference is that the kids hopefully also do science experiments that have results that support what they learn form their text books. Religions are taught on the "because I say so" ideology. Science wants to be questioned. It is part of the scientific process that you try to prove your theory wrong. Religion is taught to be never questioned. And if you do you are hand waved away, or persecuted.
And those differences are what make science class learning and bible class brainwashing.

"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
