Mike’s policies helped cut teen smoking in half and cut heart disease by 32% in New York City.

Mike helped reduce childhood obesity in New York City by 5.5% while it went up in the rest of the country.

Career & Technical Education

Mike has worked hard to create and expand pathways to good jobs and career success. Many students who do not go to college leave high school unprepared for the workforce. As mayor and as a philanthropist, Mike has launched and supported programs that help more students graduate with the skills they need to succeed in careers. As president, Mike will invest in pathways that create new opportunities and access to well-paying jobs for all Americans.

Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, Mike is supporting organizations that help connect high school students with skills and experience. So far over 2,000 students around the country have received skills training for high-demand jobs, and Mike’s support will help train 20,000 more students by 2022.

As mayor of New York City, Mike created innovative new high schools that combine work experience, internships, and career credentials with a traditional curriculum.

Mike launched and expanded programs to help young people get internships to learn digital skills and gain work experience. A paid internship program to help lower-income students in community college gain skills and access to good jobs.

Mike has supported the transition to clean energy in the coal regions of West Virginia through a program that created 200 new jobs in forward-looking industries – including energy efficiency, sustainable construction, and local agriculture – and provided skills training to more than 1,000 people.

Bloomberg LP joined forces with the Fortune Society to create a paid internship program for people who were formerly incarcerated and face obstacles to full-time employment.

Education & College Access

As mayor of New York City, Mike took over a failing and dysfunctional school system and turned it into a national model of reform. He strengthened standards and created more quality school options. Today, Mike leads national efforts to increase the number of lower-income students enrolled in top colleges. As president, Mike will make it a top national priority to increase student achievement, college preparedness, and career readiness.

Mike’s reform policies led to a 42% increase in graduation rates in New York City public schools, with African-American and Hispanic students making the biggest gains.


Mike doubled the education budget and gave a 42% raise to teachers, because he believes in paying teachers well and recruiting and retaining the best.

Mike’s national College Point program has connected 66,000 high-achieving, lower-income high school students to free college counseling.

Mike created 126,000 additional classroom seats and opened 654 new schools.

When Mike started as mayor, none of the top 25 elementary or middle schools in the state were in New York City. When he finished, 22 of the top 25 schools in the state were in New York City.

Equal Rights

Mike has fought passionately to help America fulfill its promise of equal rights and equal opportunity for all. As mayor, he stood up to bigotry and discrimination, championed LGBTQ rights, helped lead the fight for marriage equality, and presided over New York City’s first official same-sex marriage the day it became legal. Mike’s company is a global leader in advancing gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Mike helped lead New York State’s push for marriage equality, which became law in 2011.

Mike stood up for religious freedom, tolerance, and diversity when he forcefully defended the right to build an Islamic community center near the World Trade Center site.

For two decades, Mike’s company has provided benefits to domestic partners, regardless of gender.

Mike’s company received a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign and was named one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality."

The Fight Against Climate Change

Mike is a global leader in the fight against the climate crisis and has helped drive progress on every continent through his role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Action. He has worked with cities, states, and businesses to keep our country moving forward on climate change despite President Trump’s failed attempts to drag us backwards. As president, Mike will ensure the federal government leads an ambitious agenda to accelerate the U.S. toward a clean energy economy.

Mike's Record on Climate

Mike’s partnership with the Sierra Club to replace U.S. coal-fired power plants with clean energy has led to nearly 300 coal plant closures and 10,000 fewer deaths from coal pollution each year. According to Politico, it may be the most successful campaign “in the history of the environmental movement.”

Mike and former California Governor Jerry Brown have rallied thousands of cities, states, businesses, and other organizations to uphold America’s obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement, after President Trump announced he would pull out of the pact.

Mike created America’s most comprehensive urban sustainability plan, which reduced New York City’s carbon footprint by 14%, expanded solar power, eliminated dirty-burning heating oil, and achieved New York City’s cleanest air quality in more than 50 years.

Mike’s mayoral administration planted 800,000 trees and added 850 acres of parkland.

Mike has led the charge to improve how companies measure and report climate-related financial risks, which helps them take actions to combat the climate crisis and build a more resilient economy.

Foreign Policy

Mike has built global coalitions of mayors to share strategies and spread proven solutions to cities around the world. Mike's Record on Foreign Policy

Mike is the president of the board of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a network of the world’s megacities dedicated to finding and implementing proven climate solutions.

Mike was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as Special Envoy for Climate Action, with the charge of supporting the UNSG’s climate strategy and mobilizing support for a more ambitious approach to fighting climate change.

Mike served as the World Health Organization’s Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries, supporting global efforts to protect people and save lives by helping to spread proven solutions and building partnerships between cities and local leaders.

Mike is the founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, whose mission is to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people. It has worked in 510 cities and 129 countries.

Mike created the Bloomberg Global Business Forum and the New Economy Forum, both of which bring together government and business leaders to collaborate and find solutions to big challenges.


Mike created the Climate Finance Leadership Initiative, which brings together seven of the world’s largest financial institutions with the goal of helping to fund and support ambitious climate plans.
