Biden to announce September withdrawal plans for U.S troops in Afghanistan and will say, ‘It is time to end America’s longest war’ “We went to Afghanistan because of a horrific attack that happened 20 years ago," President Biden will say, according to excerpts the White House released ahead of the president’s speech Wednesday afternoon. "That cannot explain why we should remain there in 2021.” Biden will say that although the military mission will end by Sept. 11, the diplomatic and humanitarian work will continue, along with U.S. support for the Afghan government.
