The shooting, which happened on Canal Street, left two of the victims in critical condition, the police said.
Officers near the scene of the shooting reported hearing gunfire around 3:21 a.m., the police said. They found multiple individuals had been shot. No officers were injured.
The police said on Twitter that a person was detained near the scene but that the individual’s “possible involvement” in the shooting remained under investigation, and that no arrests had been made. It was not clear what had motivated the shooting.
The police initially said 10 people had been hurt, but later said on Twitter that an additional victim had walked into a hospital for treatment. Later in the afternoon, the police reverted to the tally of 10 victims.
Louisiana State Police and federal officials are helping the New Orleans police in the investigation.
“The shootings on Canal Street early this morning were an ugly disruption of an otherwise beautiful holiday weekend,” LaToya Cantrell, the mayor, said on Twitter. “We will do everything we can to wrap the victims and their families in our love and support, and to bring the criminals responsible to justice.”
The shooting occurred after the Bayou Classic, an annual football game between two historically black universities, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
A shooting in 2015 after the game left one man dead. In 2016, one man was killed and nine others were injured in a shooting on Bourbon Street after the game.
While this is the third shooting during the weekend of the Bayou Classic in the past five years, Shaun Ferguson, the Police Department superintendent, said that violent crimes in New Orleans have been dropping.
“For a fourth straight year, New Orleans continues to see significant reductions in violent crime,” Superintendent Ferguson said in a statement. “What happened in our city overnight was a cowardly and senseless act that we cannot and will not tolerate.”
