Most of my college science classes were in Physics and Chemistry, but I took a course on Genetics and learned about DNA, inheritance, etc. Although the course didn't focus much on evolution, I was struck by the observation that the existence of DNA proves how evolution works: if there is a chemical change in one's DNA, then the sperm or egg will cause a mutation. Some mutations (like those that weaken childhood immunity) are bad for an organism, others (like an eye color change) are neither good nor bad, and the ones that strengthen the individual will be more likely to increase survival.

"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne

I'm adding this to my list of favorite quotes. It's about how evolution works.
