When the endgame begins, the 1st thing you want to do is get the king out to where it can attack the opponent's pawns. The chess player who gets the king out first is much more likely to win the game, even if he or she is a pawn down.

"Once it’s safe for your king to join the action, you should do so immediately. When you have only a few pieces left, then it’s very important that your king should come out to support them and you can do this by moving your king in the direction where he will be useful, and usually that means that he should move towards the center."

Lots of interesting stuff about endgames at CHESSFOX.COM - Lesson 7 – What you should do in the endgame.

I need to study this stuff. I have been playing chess for more than a half-century but I'm still a beginner.
