"How did religion get started?"
Ancient humans, who knew nothing about science and nothing about reality, wanted to understand why our planet is here and where did all these creatures come from. Somebody invented a magical being who magically created stuff out of nothing. From there things were made up about this magical being, and that's why there have been thousands of religious cults.
Here in the 21st century we know things these days. We have something called science. We know a magical being's magical powers were never necessary for anything, therefore the magic thing doesn't exist.
Uneducated morons didn't get the memo.
"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
