“Violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism and tribalism and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children: organized religion ought to have a great deal on its conscience.”

I read "god is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything." It's excellent and I recommend it.
The best book on this subject is "Faith Versus Fact" by Jerry Coyne. Mr. Coyne, a biologist at the University of Chicago, completely and repeatedly kills the ridiculous god fantasy.
Jerry Coyne also wrote "Why Evolution Is True" which is the best book ever written about the evidence for evolution. It's not tedious like some books about science. Every paragraph is interesting.
"Darwin was the first to use data from nature to convince people that evolution is true, and his idea of natural selection was truly novel. It testifies to his genius that the concept of natural theology, accepted by most educated Westerners before 1859, was vanquished within only a few years by a single five-hundred-page book. On the Origin of Species turned the mysteries of life's diversity from mythology into genuine science." -- Jerry Coyne
