How many "good" Christians realize that such a verse appears in the Bible? 

Such words helped give justification to mediaeval Crusaders who slaughtered men, women and children along their way to Jerusalem and stole the spoils of the cities. Even today, many Christian military men use Scripture to justify their actions

Slay Old And Young
These words, commanded by God, orders the slaying of not only women and the old, but of little children.
"And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and woman: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house." (Ezekiel 9:5-6)

"And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ***, with the edge of the sword."(Joshua 6:21)

Decapitate Them!

Those who worshipped other gods must die, and even more horribly, their heads displayed publicly.
